Student Applications Security & Privacy

The School District of Springfield Township uses technology tools and online applications to support student learning and classroom instruction. Many of these programs are provided by trusted third-party companies and may require limited student information, such as a student’s name or school email address.
The district is committed to protecting student privacy and ensuring that all applications and services comply with federal and state privacy laws.

Student Privacy Protections

FERPA

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) protects student education records and personal information.
Under FERPA:

  • Student data may only be used for educational purposes approved by the district
  • Vendors may not sell or misuse student information
  • Access to student data is restricted and protected

COPPA

The Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) protects children under the age of 13.
In educational settings:

  • Schools may approve educational applications on behalf of families
  • Applications may only collect information needed for school use
  • Student information may not be used for commercial purposes
