FERPA

Notification of Rights Under FERPA

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) gives parents and students who are 18 years old or older (“eligible students”) certain rights related to student education records.

Your FERPA Rights

Right to Review Records

Parents and eligible students have the right to inspect and review education records within 45 days of making a request.

To request access:

  • Submit a written request to the school principal or appropriate school official
  • Clearly identify the records you would like to review

The school will arrange a time and place for review.

Right to Request Changes

Parents or eligible students may request changes to records they believe are:

  • Inaccurate
  • Misleading
  • In violation of privacy rights

Requests should:

  • Be submitted in writing
  • Clearly explain what should be changed and why

If the request is denied, families have the right to request a hearing.

When Information May Be Shared

FERPA allows schools to share certain student information without written consent in specific situations, including:

  • With school staff who have a legitimate educational interest
  • When students transfer to another school
  • For financial aid purposes
  • To comply with legal orders or subpoenas
  • During health or safety emergencies
  • With organizations conducting approved educational studies
  • With agencies supporting students in foster care

Schools may also share “directory information” if allowed by FERPA regulations.

Record of Disclosures

The school keeps records of certain disclosures of student information. Parents and eligible students may review those records.

Filing a FERPA Complaint

Parents or eligible students may file a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education if they believe FERPA rights have been violated.
