State Assessments (PSSA, PASA & Keystone Exams)
At Springfield Township School District, we use many different measures to understand student learning and growth. Classroom assignments, projects, teacher observations, local assessments, and state assessments all provide valuable information that helps us support students and improve instruction.
State assessments are one part of this larger picture. They help schools, districts, and families understand how students are progressing toward Pennsylvania’s academic standards and support school improvement efforts across the state.
Why Do Students Participate in State Assessments?
Pennsylvania requires all public school districts to administer state assessments. These assessments measure how well students are learning the knowledge and skills expected at their grade level.
Assessment results help educators:
- Monitor student progress
- Identify strengths and areas for growth
- Improve instruction and support programs
- Evaluate school and district performance
- Meet state and federal reporting requirements
State assessments are only one measure of student learning. At SDST, assessment results are reviewed alongside classroom performance, local assessments, student growth, and other indicators of success.
District Accountability
As a public school district, SDST is required to administer state assessments and report participation and results to the Pennsylvania Department of Education.
Assessment results are included in state and federal accountability reports, including the Future Ready PA Index.
We use assessment data to:
- Review programs and services
- Identify student needs
- Support continuous improvement
- Strengthen teaching and learning

What Assessments Do Students Take?
Parent & Guardian Rights
Pennsylvania law provides parents and guardians with specific rights regarding state assessments.
Parents may review a state assessment if they believe the assessment conflicts with their religious beliefs.
Assessment Review Process
- Reviews take place at the school during designated times established by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.
- Parents must sign a confidentiality agreement before reviewing assessment materials.
- Assessment materials may not be copied.
- Notes about test questions may not leave the school.
If, after reviewing the assessment, a parent or guardian determines that the assessment conflicts with their religious beliefs, they may submit a written request to excuse their child from participation.
Requests should be directed to the Office of the Assistant Superintendent in accordance with Pennsylvania regulations.
Families interested in reviewing an assessment should contact their child’s school for additional information.
