Section 504 Information

 

 

What Is a 504 Plan?

A 504 Plan provides support for students with disabilities that affect their learning or school participation.

A student may qualify if they:

  • Have a physical or mental condition that substantially limits one or more major life activities and affects participation in school programs or activities.
  • Have a history of an impairment, or be regarded as having an impairment, even if the condition does not currently limit participation.

504 Plan vs. an Individualized Education Plan (IEP)

Both 504 Plans and IEPs help students, but they are different:

504 Plan IEP (Individualized Education Program)
Falls under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 Falls under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)
Can apply to students with any physical or mental disability that affects a major life activity Applies to students who qualify under one of the 13 disability categories identified by IDEA
Provides accommodations and supports to help students access learning Provides specialized instruction, accommodations, and related services based on identified needs

How to Request a 504 Evaluation

If your child has a physical or mental disability and you believe it is affecting their ability to participate fully in school, we encourage you to speak with your child’s teacher or principal.

Concerns may include:

  • Academic performance
  • Communication skills
  • Behavior
  • Social-emotional development
  • Other factors that impact learning or school participation

The school team will review your concerns and your child’s school performance to determine appropriate next steps. This may include:

  • Additional supports through the Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS)
  • A review for a Section 504 Service Agreement
  • Consideration for a special education evaluation, if appropriate
