Early Intervention Transition to Kindergarten

If your child receives Preschool Early Intervention services (through MCIU), there is a planned process to help them transition into kindergarten.
This process is a team effort between:

Your family
The Montgomery County Intermediate Unit (MCIU)
Springfield Township School District

What to Expect

At the transition meeting, you will have the opportunity to meet:

Members of our therapy team
The building principal
School psychologist
Special education administrator

📍 Transition meetings will be held virtually, and meeting details will be provided by your Montgomery County Intermediate Unit (MCIU) administrator.

Important Notes

Your child does not need to attend the meeting.
We may ask about:
- Current therapies and services
- Your child's strengths, needs and interests
- School schedule
- Contact information
Our district registrar will be available to help you begin the registration process.

Start the registration process as early as possible to help ensure a smooth and successful transition to kindergarten.

Developing the Kindergarten Plan

After the transition meeting is completed:

Springfield Township staff may schedule an observation of your child as part of the transition process.
Based on information gathered during the transition meeting, the team may issue a Permission to Re-Evaluate (PTRE) if additional information is needed to make educational programming decisions.
In the spring, a case manager will contact you to schedule an IEP meeting to finalize services for the upcoming school year. Parents are important members of the IEP team and play a key role in the decision-making process.
If your child is eligible for services, the IEP will be implemented on the first day of school.

Beginning the School Year

Once school begins:

Your child’s case manager will work closely with your family.
Communication systems will be established.
Progress updates and support information will be shared throughout the year.

Transition Planning

After the transition meeting, the team may determine that an updated evaluation is needed to help make educational programming decisions. The district’s school psychologist will communicate the next steps with families.
The school team may schedule an observation of your child in their preschool setting. Families will be notified in advance about the timing of any observations.
During the spring, the team will schedule an IEP meeting to review evaluation results and finalize services and supports for the upcoming school year.
