About Springfield Township School District
The School District of Springfield Township provides a warm, supportive and world class learning environment that combines the best resources available within a small-town climate. Our district offers a safe, diverse, and inclusive community that promotes strong values of acceptance and personalized opportunities for pursuit of educational goals. Our district mission statement is to “Educate and develop all students as learners and citizens who are high-achieving, resilient, and responsible in a changing global community.” The district promotes equitable opportunities, resources, supports, and access for all students, and the Board of School Directors has formally approved Six Goals of Educational Equity, showing their commitment to enabling every child to achieve high standards of excellence.
The School District of Springfield Township is located just over the border from the Chestnut Hill and Mount Airy sections of the City of Philadelphia, within suburban Springfield Township in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. The district sits within an approximately six square mile historic area dating back to the early 1700’s, when William Penn gave much of the land to his first wife as a gift. Later, in the late 1700’s, the area was the site of the Battle of Germantown and the march to Valley Forge during the American Revolution.
Who We Are
Included within the district’s boundaries are the primary communities of Erdenheim, Flourtown, Oreland, and Wyndmoor, with some areas of Lafayette Hill and Glenside as well within district lines. The district currently serves a little over 2,600 students in its four schools – Enfield Elementary (grades K and 1), Erdenheim Elementary (grades 2 – 5), Springfield Middle School (grades 6 -8), and Springfield High School (grades 9 – 12). Currently under construction is a new elementary school which, when opened in the fall of 2020, will house grades K, 1, and 2. The district has also undertaken extensive renovations and improvements in the high school through a major construction project over the past two years, including the addition of a new auxiliary gym, interior construction of new locker rooms, bathrooms, television studio, and fitness training facilities, two turf fields, and the addition of other new athletic fields and tennis courts.
The district employs 270 professional staff members, of which 217 are classroom teachers. The remainder includes specialized staff, including special education teachers, occupational and physical therapists, speech and language teachers, guidance counselors, social workers, psychologists, intervention specialists, English as a Second language teachers, and reading specialists. Over 90% of the professional staff holds a Master’s degree or higher. Recruitment and hiring efforts are channeled towards the selection of a highly qualified, expert, and diversified staff.
The district maintains its own fleet of buses and employs its own staff of bus drivers, food service workers, technology specialists, and maintenance personnel. Custodial services are contracted outside the district.
The average class size in our Kindergarten, first grade, and second grade classes is 20 to 21 students. In grades three through five, the average is 24 – 25 students, and at the secondary level, the average is about 25 – 26 students, depending on the course.
The latest statistics from the Pennsylvania Department of Education list the cohort graduate rate of the high school at 96.31%, one of the highest levels in the state, while 82.91% of the senior class typically attends a two or four- year college. The remainder of students typically enter the military or matriculate into other specialized educational programs. Students from Springfield Township High School have been accepted at many of our nation’s most prestigious colleges and universities, including Princeton University, the University of Pennsylvania, Dartmouth College, the United States Naval Academy, and many more. Our district logo is the Spartan, representing might and resolve in the face of adversity, determination, courage, and unshakeable faith. District colors are blue and steel.
Educational Philosophy and Opportunities
School district programs are designed around student centered approaches to instructional practice. The district staff is trained in incorporating project-based and personalized learning opportunities, differentiated instruction, the integration of meaningful technologies and STEM experiences, future and career readiness exploration, and social and emotional learning for all students. The district maintains a robust program of inclusion for special needs students, surpassing the state average for the amount of time students spend in the general education classroom.
The annual district general fund budget is approximately $57 million. Over the past seven years, the district has successfully maintained stable budgetary increases of approximately 2.1% per year, all of which have been at or below the Act I Index cap. The district maintains a healthy fund balance that is typically used to offset rising state retirement payment obligations, debt and costs incurred for construction projects, capital improvements, and when offered, retirement incentive programs.
