Reading Olympics 2008-2009
Again
this year, Springfield Township Middle School will participate in the
Montgomery County Reading Olympics. Middle School students will compete against students from other schools on their knowledge
of the Reading Olympics’ books.We
encourage all students to prepare for the Reading Olympics by reading
the books from the following grade level lists.
Reading Olympics teams will be organized in January. In
order to be part of a team, a student must read at least five books
from one of the following lists by the end of December and a total of
ten books from the list by March. For each book read, a student
is expected to complete a book form and return it to the library. Students should look for the Reading Olympics book cart in the library;
there they can find books from the list as well as book forms
to complete.
The goal of the Reading Olympics is to encourage
children to read and also to give students the opportunity to compete
on a team in an academic activity. We invite all students to prepare
for the Reading Olympics by reading the books on the appropriate
Reading Olympics grade level list. Happy Reading!

Details About Reading Olympics!
When
will Reading Olympics teams meet?
In October and November, all Middle School students will be invited to come to an after-school meeting to find out more about the Reading Olympics. Students who
are interested in participating in Reading Olympics will need to attend at least one of these meetings.
In January,
February, and March, we will have two after-school meetings/month
so that the teams can organize, plan, and practice for the Reading Olympics.
It is important that participants attend all meetings.
In early
April, we will have one final after-school meeting before the
Reading Olympics competition. Then, on the evening of the Reading Olympics,
students will stay after school for dinner before we go to the competition.
On each
meeting day, students will be dismissed at 3:55 in order to be able
to ride the 4:00 bus home. Car riders need to be picked up at 3:55.
What
is my Reading Olympics' Reading Level?
Fifth
grade students compete in the Elementary Level of the Reading Olympics.
Sixth grade students may choose to compete in either the Elementary
or Middle Level of the competition. Seventh grade students compete in
the Reading Olympics' Middle Level.
How many students are on a team?
Each
team has 8-12 students. There can be two alternates on the team, but
a maximum of 12 students are permitted to compete at one time.
When
and where will the Reading Olympics be held this year?
This
information is not yet available. When it becomes available, it will
be posted in this space.
