The World Affairs Club at
Springfield Township High School is comprised of a small
but dedicated group of students sharing an interest in
current events here in the United States and around the
globe. The World Affairs Club sponsors educational
programs at Springfield such as guest speakers and
simulations. As an active member of the World Affairs
Council of Philadelphia, we participate in many Council
sponsored events. We are also proud to be part of the
family of high schools affiliated with the Organization of American States Model General
Assembly.

The Model Organization of American
States (OAS)
Approximately 35 high
schools from around the country meet in
Washington, DC annually to simulate the work of
the OAS General Assembly. Sponsored by the OAS Department of Public
Information, each school is assigned
the role of a member nation. Students prepare
resolutions dealing with issues related to
economic development, human rights, drug abuse,
cultural exchange and education in the western
hemisphere. In addition to learning about these
issues through extensive research of primary and
secondary source materials, students also learn
about the history, geography and foreign policy
of their assigned country. Also, students must
learn and use parliamentary procedure while
enhancing skills in writing, public speaking and
diplomacy. Preparation

The World Court Simulation
Students from the Philadelphia
region participate in a simulation of the
International Court of Justice (ICJ) sponsored by
the World
Affairs Council. Each year, a case of
international significance is created and the
relevant facts and issues are researched. Two
teams of student attorneys present the case as it
is heard by a panel of fifteen students who
simulate the Justices of the World Court.
The Model United Nations
Students represent an
assigned country as they simulate the committee
activities of the General Assembly of the United
Nations. Advanced preparation is required
in this World
Affairs Council sponsored event. A
pre-model session is held in March. Club
