Course Objective: AP Physics is a second year course designed to specifically prepare you for the AP Physics C exam. This course is equivalent to a first year college physics course. The curriculum is demanding and challenging, emphasizing a variety of high level problems, some requiring calculus. The role of the instructor is to guide the students through this course in order to earn a 3 or higher on the AP exam.

Course Requirements: The time spent on this course will consist of participating in classroom lectures/discussions, doing homework problems (lots of them), performing labs and activities, and taking tests and quizzes, all of which will be designed to prepare the students for the AP exam. It is understood that each student will have a well organized notebook for the work we do here, pencils, pens, and a scientific calculator, i.e., one that performs sin, cos, tan, exponential notation, exponents, and log functions. Each student is expected to know how to operate their calculator correctly, including interpreting answers in degrees or radians, using scientific notation, and interpreting the correct number of significant figures. Homework will be assigned every night, consisting of 1 - 2 hours spent reading the text and solving 4 - 6 problems.

Homework: I will not collect homework on a daily basis. In order to do well in this class you HAVE to do your homework. Most of the material on the tests and quizzes will be related directly to your homework. This is essential for this class. If you don't keep up on a daily basis, you are going to sink very fast. REMEMBER, YOU MUST PASS THE EXAM WITH A 3 OR BETTER!

Quizzes: Quizzes may be given to ascertain your grasp of homework problems. Problems may be selected verbatim from previous homework assignments and given as a quiz. Quizzes may also be given to check on your conceptual understanding of the material being studied. Tests: Tests will be given periodically (usually every 2 - 4 weeks) in order to assess your progress and prepare you for the AP exam. Tests will be lengthy, and consist of problems you have not seen before.

Labs: Laboratory experiments shall enhance topics discussed during class sessions. The labs performed shall be predetermined by the instructor and may require a formal write-up. Requirements for the lab experiment write-ups will be given in a separate handout.

Student Expectations: You are responsible for your own learning! In addition to following the regulations and policies mandated by Springfield High School, students are expected to exhibit a set of behaviors, which promote academic and social success in Physics class.      These behaviors include the following:
~ Make a concerted effort to do all course work and to obtain the teacher's assistance immediately if you encounter any difficulty.
~ Be in your seat, supplies out, ready to work when the bell rings.
~ Turn in all assignments when due.
~ Treat everyone with the utmost respect and dignity.
~ Do not talk during school announcements.
~ Remain in your seat until dismissed from class.
~ When you leave, push your chair under your table.
~ Respect and care for all laboratory and classroom equipment.
~ Exhibit a personal code of honor by taking responsibility for one's work, performance and understanding of course content.

Other Requirements: You will be required to assist first year physics students a minimum of 1 week during each semester. You are responsible for signing up on the posted calendar and finding transportation to arrive at school by 6:30 AM every morning for a week per "tour of duty". Your responsibilities in this capacity will include tutoring, helping lab groups with write-ups, grading, lab equipment set up and clean up, and other duties as assigned.
