There are several essays about anti-Semitism in the Middle East. Alan Dershowitz has written an essay about assimilation problems of American Jews. The bibliography is an excellent resource for further research and there is also a list of organizations to contact for further information. Each chapter includes an introduction explaining the topic, a timeline for major events pertaining to the topic, history of the topic and an explanation of major terms. There are sidebars and charts for quick reference. For example in the chapter on volcanoes, there are charts on major eruptions and famous volcanoes. The two appendices include a list of careers in natural history and list web sites by topic. Middle and high school students will find this volume a good place to begin research. Facts On File, 1999. 0-8160-3903-8 $35.00 (Grades 6-12) This book contains more than 230 biographical entries of black Americans from early colonial times to present, representing men and women from various walks of life. Entries vary in length but give essential information. Students will find this a handy, quick reference. Many features make this a useful resource. Immediately following each entry is a list of books for further reading. There is also an extensive list of recommended resources at the back of the book. In addtion to the general index, entries are listed both by specialty and by year of birth. A chronology helps put the entrants in historical perspective. The selection of pictures does leave something to be desired. There are not that many pictures, even though photographs of some subjects are readily available.The pictures of Jessie Jackson and Magic Johnson are very dated. Religions, social customs, media, literature, performing arts, architecture, art, sculpture and photography are included within this work. Each dinosaur gets a two page spread which includes a side bar of "Dinofacts" with a time line and map for location, a general description, how it was discovered and its close relatives. The information varies, as does the amount of data available on each dinosaur. The illustrations have depth and display action. This set does not go into depth but gives essential data. It will be useful for reports, especially since it covers more that the standard well-known dinosaurs. It may lead to deeper exploration. All readers will enjoy browsing. Jeannie Bellavance

The essays cover causes and symptoms of eating disorders; the personal and social, and cultural issues involved; and the treatment that is available. Programs for treating these disorders are listed. In addition, there are lists of books, articles, electronic resources and web sites. There is a section that gives organizations, associations, hotline counseling services and support groups. Scott Edelstein has been a professional writer, editor, literary agent, writing and publishing consultant and writing teacher. He has written this guide as a brief, simple, straight-forward guide that answers the basic questions about becoming a writer. The book is divided into short sections that discuss some of the maxims of writing. His suggestions can be somewhat obvious--to become a writer, you must practice writing. Other helpful hints include reference volumes a writer should have within easy reach-a complete dictionary, a thesaurus, a reference manual about the details of the English language, a reference volume of general information like an almanac, an encyclopedia (CD-ROM is fine) and a spelling dictionary. He discusses the writing process, making money from your writing and some interesting details about a writer's life. There are many color and black and white photos. The set is arranged alphabetically, and each volume has an index. The final volume contains a very comprehensive index and eight subject indexes, a glossary and a time line. The emphasis is on the United States and entries for Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Greenland add dimension to the encyclopedia. (HS+) This two-volume edition, devoted to musical composers of African heritage, is admirable in its detailed coverage of the 180 composers including photographs, biographies, critical evaluations, discographies and lists of printed works about the composers. The critical evaluations, written by 105 musicians and scholars, are substantial and informative. The composers included represent the musical genres of jazz, ragtime, gospel, rock and reggae. The bulk of the work, however, is devoted to the contributions of classical Black composers. Susan Mowery

To write a book about the story of nuclear power that is understandable for students is a difficult project and the authors have succeeded in writing about a very difficult subject and in also making it readable. Extensive scientific explanations are kept manageable. The historical sections about the Manhattan Project and the building of the bomb that was dropped on Hiroshima are interesting to the non-science reader. The section on the Argonne National Laboratory and the work at the University of Chicago on nuclear reactors was fascinating. The description of the nuclear accidents throughout the years describes some accidents that very little is known about because of the secrecy of countries. The selections include complete articles, speeches, book excerpts, cartoons, and boxed quotations. There are brief introductions to each section that help students to focus on the questions raised in the selection. The organization of the volume will assist students doing research on the Middle East. The first chapter has eight essays that focus on the question of why the Middle East has been a center of conflict. There are eight essays on the role religion has played in the region. There are a series of articles that debate the issue of American involvement in Middle Eastern issues and essays about the potential for peace in an area that has been the center of so much conflict. The bibliography suggests other sources for student research and the chronology of events helps readers to understand the many years of conflict in the Middle East. Most entries are quite brief but some can cover several pages, particularly, for his most memorable characters. In addition there are five appendixes: a map from Islands in the Stream, a family tree, Hemingway's Chronology and Dateline, a list of film, stage, television and radio adaptations of Hemingway's work, as well as works about Hemingway and a bibliography. This biographical sourcebook is a useful tool for any library due to its easy to follow layout and detailed and interesting information. Scanlon begins with an introduction and then goes right into the biographies of notable American feminists. She begins with the book with Bella Abzug and continues through the alphabet up until Ellen Willis. She also includes some more modern women, such as Anna Quindlen and Alice Walker. Each of the fifty biographies in the sourcebook is written by a different contributing author. The conclusion of the book has a Selected Biography, an Index, and information about the editor and contributors.

This volume will be an excellent addition to collections where students debate sex education and related topics. There is a wide spectrum of opinions included in this book. Students who are debating safe sex practices, abstinence education, and condom distribution programs in school will find a wealth of information. The authors are considered experts in the field and the short summaries prior to each essay will help students focus on the arguments included in the essays. There are essays that speak specifically to sexual practices. This book is for high school students who are seeking clearly presented information about sexually transmitted diseases which now include nearly 25 infectious organisms. Health classes could easily use these essays in discussions about sex education and students who are involved in pro-con speeches would find this book an excellent addition to the library. This biographical reference is highly readable and includes illustrations and timelines. There are several appendices which are helpful such as the "Highlights in the history of..."which presents a discussion of the major events in each area; and also lists of biographies arranged by country and by scientific discipline. ( Grades 8-12+) This is a very useful travel book for adventurous travelers who attempt to get to know a country well on a visit. It is also useful for country reports so often assigned in global studies classes in high school. The authors provide an extensive section on history, geography, ecology, government and politics. They also discuss education, the arts, society, religion and languages in each of their travel books. There is an extensive section on traveling in the country and what is required. The activities are designed for the traveler who wants to do more than sit on a bus and watch the countries go by and they are tremendously useful for those who want to cycle, walk, fish, ski, climb, birdwatch and go canoeing. It was interesting to finally find out what Haggis is and to learn about the Coldstream Guards. The pictures of the landscape and famous historical markers give the reader a chance to become familiar with the beautiful sites in Scotland.
