Keeping Your Sailors on Course
When Joyce Kasman Valenza talks about the Internet, she may pull out her Power Point presentation that draws its inspiration from the story of Ulysses, searching the world over for his source.
If you're a school library media specialist or public youth librarian, you've seen plenty of students adrift in your library, report assignment in hand. You know how lost they can get in the uncharted waters of the Internet. You don't need to be reminded of the threatening Cyclops or the seductive calls of the Sirens. You know that you must, like Athena, keep your sailors on course and help them reach their research goals safely.
Here are two tools to help you lead the way. Save 'em or print 'em.
- Web Cheat Sheet. More than you can fit on the back of your hand.
- Steps in Online Searching. Charts the course for research.
In the forthcoming book/CD-ROM package, Power Tools: 100+ Forms and Presentations for Your School Library Information Program, Joyce has assembled an assortment of imaginative tools to make your communications lively and effective.
You wear many hats, so this customizable power pack delivers good forms for every occasion--whether day-to-day work with students and teachers or formal presentations to administrators, boards, or parents. If you've seen Joyce's presentations at conferences, you'll recognize the whimsy of her daughter Emily Valenza's original art. Here's what's in the Power Tools pack:
- Loose-leaf forms and hard copy of Power Point slides
- Booklet with brief explanations on how to use the form and patter to accompany the slides.
- CD-ROM for Windows or Macintosh OS with four Power Point presentations and Word files for the forms.
