Springfield Township School District

Pathways

Springfield Township High School has instituted a Pathways program to provide our students the direction needed to begin to establish career goals and decisions. This innovative concept is designed to assist students and their counselors in identifying interests and aptitudes that will provide direction in course selection and career plans.

The program organizes elective courses into broad groups of occupational areas and career fields called clusters. Each cluster is further subdivided into more specific career pathways. Students will thus gain a better understanding of how specific courses correspond to specfic careers, assisting them in moving from high school to further education and the workforce.

Pathways also serves a an umbrella for providing extra- and co-curricular opportunities in the community through such experiences as internships, community service, shadowing experiences and the senior LEEP experience.

A Pathways website explaining and outlining the program and identifying clusters is shown to all 9th and 10th grade students for the course selection process and is available to any other student or parent.

It is important to note that the High School remains committed to providing our students with a sound liberal arts education and students are not limited to taking electives with a particular pathway or cluster.

A brochure has been prepared for students that outlines extension opportunities that are available to juniors and, especially, seniors. These various offerings provide insights into the broader world and give students valuable experiences beyond the classroom setting. They make use of community resources that include businesses, civic organizations, colleges, non-profit groups, and other agencies. They serve to expand a student's education and as a vehicle for learning new skills or applying those already learned in the classroom.
