Teen Life Studies #1402 (1 credit)
Teen Life Studies encourages students to think about how their actions today affect their future. Students explore current teen issues such as relationship building, peer pressure, self-esteem, dating, and the effects of drugs and alcohol. Students experience two hands-on projects. The "Empathy Belly" pregnancy simulator allows students to experience typical symptoms and effects of pregnancy. "Baby, Think It Over," a computerized baby program, deals with issues relating to the physical, emotional, and financial responsibilities of parenting.
Child Career Studies #1425 (1 credit)
Child Career Studies content focuses on the child from preschool to grade 3. Emphasis is on understanding and identifying children with special needs, accommodations, and environmental effects on development. Students have practical experiences in cooperation with kindergarten teachers at our elementary schools, elementary schools in Philadelphia, and neighborhood day care centers. This course is for students interested in careers in education, social work, and pediatric medicine. Prerequisite: Teen Life Studies, Psychology, or Sociology
Independent Living #1421 (.5 credit)
Independent Living prepares students for life after high school. Students learn how economic and social trends can influence their lifestyles. Topics include financial and legal responsibilities of living independently, planning living spaces, as well as practical skills needed to manage personal finances, credit card debt, insurance needs, savings, budgeting, and career choices.
Nutrition Fitness & Awareness #1405 (.5 credit)
Nutrition Fitness & Awareness provides the athlete and students interested in health and related occupations an understanding of the impact food has on their lives and how various nutrients affect body functions. They plan diets according to their specific needs, medical conditions, weight, and physical activity. Students also explore the symptoms and causes of eating disorders and the role society plays in the harmful health effects of eating disorders.
