Programs at Eastern Center for Arts And Technology

EASTERN is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. The campus is located in Willow Grove and is owned by nine school districts in Eastern Montgomery County. They include Abington, Bryn Athyn, Cheltenham, Hatboro Horsham, Jenkintown, Lower Moreland, Springfield, Upper Dublin and Upper Moreland.

Programs taken at EASTERN are considered part of the high school program and count as elective credit toward graduation. Programs enrich the student's high school experience. They give students the opportunity to reinforce their career path after high school, get a head start in collegiate studies in that field and get ready for employment. Most of the half-day programs offer advanced placement college credit opportunities for students continuing their education after high school in similar majors. The options include:

College Credit Penn State courses are 5 days a week, 7:30 - 9:00 a.m. for college bound seniors who are responsible and capable of doing college level work, are self-directed and able to manage their time wisely and are interested in accounting/finance, computer science technology or engineering as a college major. Students must pass the first semester class to be eligible to continue second semester. Students successfully completing these courses will receive 8 Penn State credits in accounting/finance, 6 Penn State credits for computer science technology, or 6 Penn State credits in engineering. Students meet on EASTERN's campus September and October and the rest of the school year on the Penn State Abington College campus.

Career programs are scheduled 5 days a week for 2 hours 45 minutes from 7:45 a.m.-10:30 a.m. or 12:00 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. in fourteen career areas are primarily offered to 11th and 12th grade students. They are recommended as a two-year sequence for students, except Allied Health, which is a senior-only option. If space is available, one-year seniors are accepted into all programs.

• A work experience program is available to qualified second-year students incorporating on-site job experiences with classroom learning.
• Many programs offer advanced placement/college credit options at colleges like DeVry University, Johnson & Wales University, Penn College of Technology, Lincoln Technical Institute, CHI, Harcum College and Bucks and Montgomery Community Colleges.

Air Conditioning and Heating Technology (4 credits)

• This two-year career program provides a comprehensive foundation of the basic theories and principles of heating, air conditioning and heat pump systems. One-year seniors will be considered if space is available in the program.
• Career Objectives:
  Air Conditioning Installation and Heating Technician; Air Conditioning and Heating Helper-(one-year students)
• Advanced Placement:
  Students may also qualify for advanced placement college credit at Penn College of Technology.
• With higher education, this program prepares the student for success in career fields as: Residential heating, air conditioning, mechanical technology, mechanical engineering, insurance consultant and building maintenance.

Allied Health (4 credits)

Be sure a career in a health field is for you and earn college credit along the way -- take Allied Health!

• This one-year senior-only program is designed for students with rigorous academic preparation who plan to continue their education in college to prepare for a career in the health field. Students will get extensive clinical experiences partnering with health professionals at Abington Memorial Hospital. Three days a week at EASTERN, student course work will include being dually enrolled with Montgomery County Community College which will afford them the opportunity to earn 3 college credits for Medical Terminology as part of the Allied Health Program.
• Career Objectives:
  A career in the allied health field requiring post secondary education
• Prerequisites:
  -Grade of 'C' or better in Algebra I & II, Biology and Chemistry (College Prep Level)
  -High school GPA of 2.5 or higher preferred.
  -Physical exam and police check as mandated by State Law
  
• With higher education, this program prepares the student for success in such career fields as: Laboratory or nuclear medicine technician, radiation therapy or radiology technician, cardiovascular and respiratory technology, physical or occupational therapy, nurse practitioner, physician's assistant or nurse.

Automotive Technology (4 credits)

Take this program to get a head start in the automotive field!

• This two-year career program is designed for the student who is serious about working in the automotive industry. One-year seniors will be considered if space is available in the program.
• Career Objectives:
  Automotive Technician Trainee; New Car Preparation Technician; Under Car Specialist (one-year students)
• The curriculum, facility and instructor are:
  -National Institute of Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certified
  -Partners with the Automotive Youth Educational Systems Program (A-YES) to provide qualified junior with experiences at participating dealerships and paid summer internships.
• Certification Students can earn:
  ASE qualifying exams (after completing a reduced period of work experience in that industry)
• Students also qualify for advanced standing through an articulation agreement with:
  -Montgomery County Community College for 9 credits
  -Lincoln Technical Institute for three courses
  -Penn College of Technology Advanced Placement understanding
  -Universal Technical Institute (UTI) for up to four UTI Auto Tech courses

Collision Repair Technology (4 credits)

You'll meet industry standards to be a success in this field!

• A student enrolled in this two-year career program benefits from a combination of classroom instruction and hands-on experience needed to carry out repairs on motor vehicles. Students benefit from the use of I-Car (Inter-Industry Conference on Auto Collision Repair) enhanced curriculum. One-year seniors will considered if space is available in the program.
• Career Objectives:
  Automotive Refinisher; Sheet Metal/ Cosmetic Repair Person; Frame/Structural Repair Person; Automotive Refinisher's Helper (one-year students)
• Program Certification:
  This is one of only twenty-one secondary programs in Pennsylvania certified by National Institute for Automotive Excellence (ASE) for meeting industry standards.
• Certification Students can earn:
  Safety and Pollution Prevention (S/P2) Certification; I-CAR points - The Collision Repair Technology is an approved member of the I-CAR Industry Training Alliance^SM. With this Alliance certification, EASTERN's Collision Repair Technology students now have the option of earning I-CAR points for training completed while at EASTERN.

Commercial Art (4 credits)

You'll develop your own portfolio!

• This two-year career program covers everything from conceptual drawing and design to a professional portfolio; students learn the value and application of their unique styles in both design and illustration; and students use industry standard software on the Macintosh Platform. That software includes: QuarkXpress, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Dreamweaver and Flash. One-year seniors will be considered if space is available.

  Graphic Design; Commercial Illustration; Digital Imaging Design
• Upon Completion of the program:
  -Students will have a portfolio consisting of items a committee of art college representatives established.
  -Senior students will have their portfolios reviewed by art school representatives.

• With higher education, this program prepares the student for success in such career fields as: Graphic design, illustration, animation, computer-generated graphic art, teaching and multi-media specialist.

Computer Network Administration (4 credits)

Would you like to be a college student while still in high school? While taking EASTERN's Computer Network Administration program, you are dually enrolled at Montgomery County Community College fo up to 12 credits! Are you or would you like to be the person your friends/family/teachers call you to fix their computers? More and more businesses need network administrators now. Get your start here!

• Students are prepared to take four industry certification exams. Certified Novell Administrator (CNA), Microsoft's Certified Professional (MCP), Linux Certification (Linux+) and Cisco Certified Entry Networking Technician (CCENT).
• Career Objectives:
  Computer Network Administrator; Novell Network Administrator-(one-year students)
• Prerequisites:
  Strong Math background (Algebra II completed or scheduled during the first year of the program)
• More than 95% of CNA students attend college with this added benefit:
  Students are dually enrolled for up to 12 credits in the Montgomery County Community College. Students are guaranteed admission to Penn State Abington's School of Information Sciences and Technology is they meet PSU criteria. Students may also qualify for advanced placement credit at Penn College of Technology and can earn up to eight credits at DeVry University for work completed at EASTERN.

Construction Technology (4 credits)

• This two-year career program is the first step for students interested in pursuing a successful career in the construction field. One-year seniors will be considered if space is available in the program.

  Carpenter Pre-Apprentice; Exterior Remodeling and Installation; Roofing & Siding Helper (one-year students)
• Students will work on both residential and commercial construction in the school's shop and at nearby building sites.
• Advanced Placement and Apprenticeship:
  Students may qualify for advanced placement college credit at Penn College of Technology or want to consider an apprenticeship program after high school

  Architecture, general contracting, teaching, surveying, construction management, construction technology, civil engineering, architectural engineering, code enforcement and insurance adjustor.

Cosmetology (4 credits)

Save over $10,000 by taking this program in high school!

• This two-year half-day program will provide the skills necessary to begin a career in the cosmetology field. In Pennsylvania, as well as other states, cosmetologists and manicurists must be licensed to practice in the field. One-year seniors will be considered if space is available in the program.
• Career Objectives:
  Cosmetologist; Manicurist/Salon Technician-(one-year students)
• Certifications students can earn:
  -First year students at EASTERN are expected to pass the State Board of Cosmetology written performance test required for licensure as a Manicurist (This is a prerequisite to continuing their studies leading to licensure as a Cosmetologist)
  -Pennsylvania State Board of Cosmetology - licensed cosmetologist.

Culinary Arts (4 credits)

• This two-year career program enables students to acquire a variety of skills including soup and sauce preparation, preparation of meat, fish and poultry entrees, baking, kitchen sanitation, purchasing and inventory controls. One-year seniors will be considered if space is available in the program.

  Cook Apprentice; Prep Cook; Pantry Person; Kitchen Helper (one year students)
• Certification students can earn:
  ServSafe Certification
• Culinary students continuing their education in this field can benefit from college credit articulation agreements with:
  -Johnson and Wales University (for up to 13.5 quarter credits)

Electrical Technology (4 credits)

Our training will provide the essential hands-on and safety skills that a student needs to pursue a rewarding career in the Electrical Construction Industry.

• This two-year multi-faceted career program enables the student to learn the basics of electricity as well as residential and commerical wiring, data cabling and basic fiber optic installation. One-year seniors will be considered if space is available in the program.
• Career Objectives:
  Residential Electrician; Commercial Electrician
• Prerequisites:
  -Good color vision and hand eye coordination
  -Ability to climb moderate heights on a ladder
• Advanced Placement and Apprenticeship:
  Students may also qualify for advanced placement college credit at Penn College of Technology or want to consider an apprenticeship program after high school

Electronics Engineering Technology (4 credits)

You'll enjoy the hands-on approach used in this program!

• In this two-year career program the hands-on learning makes it easier to understand and be succesful. You will learn how to solve technical problems and build electronic and electromechanical circuits. You will also learn how to build a computer and work with fiber optics. If you join our robotics team you will have the opportunity to design, build and test robots for various competitions. One-year seniors will be considered if space is available in the program.
• Career Objectives:
  Digital Engineering Assistant; Photonic-Electronic Technician; Electronic Assembler (one year students)
• Prerequisites:
  -The student should have taken, or be concurrently enrolled in Algebra I
  -Academic courses required by colleges should be taken during high school to qualify for college acceptance.

Landscape Contracting (4 credits)

• This two-year career program prepares students to successfully design, present and implement landscape projects; climb, prune and repair trees; manage all facets of property/grounds maintenance. One-year students will be considered if space is available in the program.
• Career Objectives: Landscape Contractor, Arborist Trainee-(one-year students); Landscape Technician
• Certifications Students can earn: Certified Landscaping Technician through the Associated Landscape Contractors of America as a Maintenance Technician and/or Installation Technician; Arborist certification from the International Society of Arboriculture; Skid Loader Safety Certification
• Advanced Placement: Students may also qualify for advanced placement college credit at Penn College of Technology.
• With higher education, this program prepares the student for success in such green career fields as: Landscape Design/Architecture, Horticulture, or Arboriculture to name a few.

Protective Services (4 credits)

You'll earn several certifications to give you a head start on careers in this field!

• This two-year career program prepares the student to enter a career related to law enforcement, fire science, safety and risk management and emergency radio dispatch. One-year seniors will be considered if space is available in the program.
• Career Objectives:
  Police; Security-(one-year students); Fire Fighter 1.
• Program Prerequisite:
  The student must undergo a State Police check to enroll in the program and work in this field.
• Certifications students can earn:
  -Firefighter 1 and 2, Fire Inspector 1 and Hazardous Materials Awareness & Operations (testing by Bucks Co. Fire Academy with certifications from the International Fire Service Training Association)
  -CPR, First Aid and AED (testing by the American Red Cross)
  -Emergency Radio Dispatcher (through the National Academy of Emergency Dispatchers)
• College Credits:
  -Articulation Agreement with Montgomery County Community College in Criminal Justice and Fire Science programs for qualified students to recieve 3 credits.
  -Qualified students taking CHI's Criminal Justice Program will be awarded 8 credits

Welding Technology (4 credits)

• This two-year career program is designed for the student who is interested in the industrial engineering field. One-year seniors will be considered if space is available in the program.
• Career Objectives:
  Combination Welder; Welder/ Fabricator; MIG Welding, Gas Welding & Cutting (one-year students)
• Students will learn about the properties of different types of metals and how to join them using state-of-the-art welding equipment.
• Advanced Placement:
  Students may also qualify for advanced placement college credit at Penn College of Technology.
• With higher education, this program prepares students for success in such career fields as: mechanical, aerospace or industrial engineering, physical metallurgist, business owner, teaching, equipment sales and welding engineer.

Accounting/Finance #2009 (2 credits)

Take this course to get a head start on a business major in college!

• This one-year senior only program is taught by Penn State Professors and is designed for the college bound student who has a strong academic background who can handle college level work and who is interested in majoring in business at college. Students attend classes at EASTERN for part of the year and also at the PSU Abington campus to give them exposure to a college environment.
• Pre or Co-requisites - Algebra I, II and Geometry
• Course offered from 7:30 to 9:00 a.m, check with your principal to see if transportation is provided
• Course Content:
  - Fall Semester - PSU course ACCTG211 - Introductory Financial and Managerial Accounting (4 PSU credits). This course provides the fundamentals to how financial accounting reports are used by various decision makers and the fundamentals of how accounting information is used by decision makers in an organization.
  - Spring Semester - PSU course FIN100 - Introduction to Finance (3 PSU credits). This course teaches the nature, scope and interdependence of the institutional and individual participants in the financial system.
  Additionally students will receive one semester of MIS106 - Specialized Microcomputer Application in Business ( 1 PSU credit). Use of microcomputer in teh functional areas of business (e.g., accounting, management, marketing, finance, etc.)
• College Credit
  Students must pass the Fall Semester to continue in the Spring Semester
  Eight PSU credits will be awarded for successfully completing both semesters
• These courses prepare the student for success in such career fields as accounting, business, marketing, management, economics and finance.

Computer and Information Science #2010 (2 credits)

This course gives you college credit and the satisfaction knowing you can do college-level work!

• This one-year senior only program is taught by Penn State faculty and is designed for the college bound student who has a strong academic background and can handle college level work who is interested in majoring in computer science, information science technology or business in college. Students attend classes at EASTERN for part of the year and also at the PSU Abington campus to give them exposure to a college environment.
• Pre or Co-requisites:
  Algebra I, II, Geometry and two years of lab science.
• Course offered from 7:30 to 9:00 a.m., check with your principal to see if transportation is provided.
• Course Content:
  - Fall Semester - PSU course CMPSC121 - Introduction to Algorithmic Processes (3 PSU credits). This course teaches the properties of algorithms, languages and notations for describing algorithms, ofa procedure-oriented language to problem solving.
  - Spring Semester - PSU course CMPSC297A - Special Projects in Computer Science (3 PSU credits). This course will include advanced C++ programming topics such as pointers and pointer operations, object-oriented design and implementation, the Standard Template Library, and data structures. There will be a final project, which will utilize all topics from the course.
• College Credit
  - Students must pass the Fall Semester to continue in the Spring Semester
  - Six PSU credits will be awards for successfully completing both semesters
• This program prepares students for success in computer science, information science technology and business.

Engineering #2015 (2 credits)

So you are good in math and science....should you be an engineer? Take this course to find out!

• This one-year senior only program is taught by Penn State Professors and was designed for the college bound student with a strong academic background who can handle college level work and who is interested in enrolling in an engineering program after high school. Students attend classes at EASTERN for part of the year and also at the PSU Abington campus to give them exposure to a college environment.
• Pre or co-requisites:
  Algebra I and II, Geometry, Chemistry and Physics with labs
• Course offered from 7:30 to 9:00 a.m., check with your principal to see if transportation is provided
• Course Content:
  - Fall Semester - Same as PSU course EDSGN100 - Introduction to Engineering Design (3 PSU credits). This course offers an introduction to engineering design through team-oriented design projects supported by communication skills: graphical, verbal and written.
  - Spring Semester - PSU course EDSGN297 - Special Topics in Engineering Methods (3 credits). This course will further develop the topics introduced in EDSGN100. Topics will include intermediate level CAD, DC, and AC, electrical circuit theory and equilibrium force systems as applied to simple frames and trusses. The course will provide additional background into methods employed by electrical and mechanical engineers.
• College Credit:
  - Students must pass the Fall Semester to continue in the Spring Semester
  - Six PSU credits will be awards for successfully completing both semesters
• This program prepares students for success in all the major fields of engineering.
