CJS 100 - Introduction to Criminal Justice #2013 (3 credits)
This course introduces the student to the American system of Criminal Justice. Its gorwth and evelopment is examined with emphasis placed on the various subsystems of the criminal justice system substantive and procedural criminal law; police, prosecution, defense, courts , institutional and community corrections; and the juvenile justice system. Additionally, contemporary issues that challenge the functional efficiency and effectiveness of the criminal justice system will be addressed.
COM 101 - Introduction to Mass Communication #2014 (3 credits)
An introductory survey of Media Communication. Media will be studied historically as both a cultural and industrial phenomenom. Beginning discussion of media theory will compare the methods, techniques and effects of different media; the influence of mass communications on society will be considered; strategies for understanding and coping with modern communications will be discussed. The course will use lectures, presentations, reports and papers.
ENG 165 - Journalism #2018 (3 credits)
An introduction to the art of journalistic writing, stressing student involvement. The jounalist's responsibility in exercising freedom of the press is emphasized through the writing of various types of news articles, feature articles and editorials.
ORI 100 - College Seminar (1 credit)
An orientation to college life including self-assessment and goal setting, academic success strategies, introduction to study skills and time management, familiarization with college resources, and appreciation of cultural diversity. This course also includes a lab component of individualized academic advising throughout the semester by the course instructor.
