Come and explore the role of business and marketing in the free enterprise system and the global economy. Gain experience operating a real-world business in various fields - such as clothing, advertising, government, banking or a video store. Use basic computer software programs to design a variety of documents. Develop an understanding of the way business works. Learn to create employment documents such as a resume, cover letter, W-4 form, timecards, and payroll. Learn your rights as a consumer/customer. Prepare for the future and develop investment strategies for buying, selling, and holding stock. Course also includes guest speakers.
Accounting I #1055 (1 credit)
What's hot in accounting? Sizzling specialty areas include auditing, forensic accounting, information technology services, international accounting and financial planning. Students study the basic principles, concepts, and practices of the accounting cycle. Students learn fundamental accounting procedures using a manual and an electronic system. Excellent course for students to explore a possible career field or college major and learn practical life-long skills. Students need a strong basic math background. Web Design and Development I #1100 (.5 credit)
Students will gain an understanding of the social and ethical issues involved in Internet development. Students will learn XHTML, the underlying language of the web; as well as key concepts of web page and graphics design. Students will learn how to incorporate JavaScript into their sites as well as create simple animations. Software used:Notepad, Macromedia Studio MX. Adobe Photoshop Elements. Grades 10-12.
Web Design and Development II #1110 (.5 credit)
Students will take the skills gained in Web Design and Development I to the next level. Students will work in teams with clients to develop attractive, effective, interactive websites using current technology and methodology. Students will learn Cascading Style Sheets, JavaScript, PHP/mySQL. Students will use Macromedia Studio, Notepad, and image editing tools. Prerequisite: B or better in Web Design and Development I. Teacher Recommendation. Grades 10-12.
Database Fundamentals #1090 (1 credit)
Students will learn data structures and database concepts such as relationships and normalization. Students will learn the process of specifying database application requirements, and will build a complete database project with tables, basic queries and basic reports. Grades 10-12.
Database Administration #1092 (1 credit)
Students will learn SQL (Structured Query Language), which is an industry standard. Students will create databases, tables, queries, input forms, and reports. Students will create and maintain database objects and store, retrieve and manipulate data with SQL. This class builds on the fundamentals learned in the prerequisite course. Prerequisite: B or better in Database Fundamentals. Teacher recommendation. Grades 10-12.
Intro Computer Science #1093 (1 credit)
Students will learn the basics of computer science while writing game programs. Students will learn how to specify, read, and debug programs that they and others have written. They will learn about variables, functions, conditionals, recursion, iteration, objects, and arrays. Students will start with the Alice interative environment, then learn a BASIC derivative specific to game programming (Blitz3D) in which they will write 3D games. This will be followed by game animation techniques. Prerequisites: Teacher recommendation. Grades 10-12.
AP Computer Science #1095 (1 credit)
This course prepares students to take the AP Computer Science AB exam offered in May. Students will learn Java and object oriented programming. Good programming practices will be emphasized along with program design. Students start with a command line interface and work extensively with the current case study. Prerequisite: Teacher recommendation and B or better in Intro to CS. Grades 11-12.
Business/Personal Law #1080 (1 credit)
Understanding Business and Personal Law introduces students to the laws that affect their daily lives. Virtual Law involves students in technology-related issues. Take a short but fun online course and learn about credit. Learn about how and when you can sue someone, study criminal law, international law, social law and learn your rights as an employee. Become aware of your rights and responsibilities as a citizen. Grades 10-12.

Do you want to own your own business one day? This course is for you. Use Virtual Business - Management to control your personnel selections, purchases, e-commerce system all while dealing with international issues such as exchange rates. This course is designed to help students evaluate their potential as an employer, small business owner or entrepreneur. Learn current business trends, forms of ownership, human relations issues such as employee motivation and conflict resolution as well as socio-economic factors of business. Conduct financial activities and marketing activities.

9th Grade Technology Course #1120 (.5 credit)
The students will become proficient in the management of information using networks and computer operating software. Students, as computer application users, will gain an intermediate/advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office 2003. Students will create graphically enhanced and professionally formatted documents. Students will input data into spreadsheets, use formulas and functions, generate graphs, and query a database. Students will learn how to create professional multi-media presentations. Students, as computer designers, will learn basic web design in XHTML and be introduced to computer science programming by creating animations. Required for graduation.
Desktop Publishing (.5 credit) #1124
Students develop proficiency in using desktop publishing software to create a variety of printed and electronic publications. Students will incorporate journalistic principles in design and layout of publications. Students will work with sophisticated hardware and software to develop web sites and multimedia presentations. Students will compose news articles and feature stories and develop employable skills. Use a fun and exciting real world simulation and be hired as a desktop publisher for a pizza shop and create all their promotional materials and business documents--from designing a memo to creating promotional punch cards.

Marketing and Public Relations #1125 (.5 credit)
Students are introduced to the foundations of sports and entertainment marketing. Students will study marketing, economics, employment and interpersonal skills, communication, selling, product planning, promotion, advertising, publicity and public relations, branding concessions, security, sponsorship and event marketing. The Virtual Business - Sports is a visual computer simulation of a football franchise that lets students handle promotion, develop ticket pricing strategies, evaluate stadiums and city locations, control stadium operations and staffing, find sponsors and licensing deals and more. Students may also participate in a Sports Entertainment Internship program and career seminar at the Wachovia Sports Center in Philadelphia. If you are interested in a career in Sports Entertainment and Marketing/Management, this is your course.
Advanced Topics in Computer Science and Engineering (.5 credit)
In this class, students choose one aspect of computer science to explore in depth. Students will work with a mentor in the field of choice and the instructor to develop a learning plan and project timeline. Students will create and maintain a web presence to communicate progress and to eventually present their project. This course invloves: research, writing, web design and development; and effective presentation techniques in addition to the demands of the chosen topic. Teacher recommendation required.
Senior Thesis in the field of Computer Science(.5 credit)
Senior thesis is a mandatory requirement for graduation. In this class, students create an independent project based upon a computer technology topic they want to explore. Students will work with a mentor in the field and the instructor to develop a detailed organizational plan that will include their outline for research and implementation of a project. Students are encouraged to challenege themselves, and to use all of the skills they have learned throughout their educational jourey at Springfield Township High School. Students will present their project to peers and individuals working in the field of choice. This course values individual freedom and flexibility while maintaining high standards for achievement. Teacher recommendation required.
