Art I #1005 (1 credit)
This introductory course is recommended before taking any of the other Art courses listed. It explores the elements and principles of design and Fine Arts by using a wide range of materials and techniques.
Art II #1010 (1 credit)
This course extends the prinicples of design and organization through the exploration of new media and painting techniques. It exposes students to acrylic painting and multi-dimensional design. Prerequisite: Successful completion of Art I.
Art III #1015 (1 credit)
Students expand their experience with new media and refine techniques previously studied in Art II. The students are introduced to independent problem solving assignments. Prerequisite: C or better in Art II.
Art IV/ AP Studio Art #1020/#1042 (1 credit)
This demanding college level course is the most advanced general art course. It includes greater emphasis on individual development, portfolio preparation, homework, art history, related field trips, career awareness and advanced presentations skills. Prerequisite: B or better in Art III.
Ceramics I #1035 (1 credit)
Students will learn to produce clay pottery and sculpture using hand building, wheel throwing and glazing techniques. Grades 10,11,12. Prerequisite: Successful completion of Art I.
Ceramics II #1037 (1 credit)
This course focuses on advanced and refined techniques as well as individual development. Students' work will be influenced by their study of various artists and cultural styles. Grades 11, 12. Prerequisite: Teacher recommendation or C or better in Ceramics I.
Painting and Drawing #1030 (1 credit)
Students will learn and apply principles and elements of design and color theory through experimentation with drawing and painting techniques. Additionally, they will learn to prepare canvases for painting and application of acrylic paints.
Sculpture #1053 (1 credit)
Students will learn sculpting techniques including assemblage, carving, casting and modeling. Three-dimensional construction will be introduced with attention to design principles and elements and sculptors. Students will discover how to create effective spatial relationships using a variety of media including clay, glass, metal, plaster and paper. Grades 10,11,12. Prerequisite: Teacher recommendation or C or better in Art I.
Fibers and Design #1050 (1 credit)
This course teaches basic techniques in batik and dying, weaving, papermaking and needlework as well as developing a sensitivity toward color and design. Functional and decorative crafts are explored along with non-functional fine arts.
Theatrical Art & Design #1721 (1 credit)
This course will focus on the process of "page to stage." Students' work will develop and evolve as they analyze various scripts and make their own artistic choices to create designs for stage productions. The class will observe past design work at Springfield and other secondary schools, as well as professional theater designs (through seeing one or more productions and visiting a scene shop). Students will be assessed on their ability to problem solve and create practical functional art and their ability to collaborate with classmates to achieve a thematic goal. Students will be required to maintain a sketchbook/journal to document their ideas and reflections of their learning. The work done in class will include but not be limited to the productions done by the Springfield High School drama students. Grades 10,11,12. Prerequisite: Art I, Theatre I or Musical Theatre
