Art I #1005 (1 credit)
Art I is a prerequisite for most other Art courses. Students explore the elements and principles of design through a wide range of materials and techniques.
Art II #1010 (1 credit)
Art II extends the principles of design and organization through the exploration of new media, advanced compositional strategies and expressive techniques. Students experience alternative painting methods and multi-dimensional design. Prerequisite: Art I.
Art III #1015 (1 credit)
In Art III students expand their experience with new media and refine techniques previously studied in Art II. Students complete an independent, problem solving assignment and experiment with materials, techniques and composition. Prerequisite: A minimum final grade of "C" in Art II.
Art IV/ AP Studio Art #1020/#1042 (1 credit)
Art IV/AP Studio Art, a college level course, is the most advanced general art course. It includes greater emphasis on individual development, portfolio preparation, art history, related field trips, career awareness and advanced presentation skills. Prerequisite: A minimum final grade of "B" in Art III or teacher recommendation.
Ceramics I #1035 (1 credit)
In Ceramics I students produce clay pottery and sculpture using hand building, wheel throwing and glazing techniques. (Grades 10-12) Prerequisite: Art I.
Ceramics II #1037 (1 credit)
Ceramics II focuses on advanced and refined techniques as well as on individual development. Students study of various artists and cultural styles. (Grades 11-12) Prerequisite: A minimum final grade of "C" in Ceramics I or teacher recommendation
Painting and Drawing #1030 (1 credit)
Painting and Drawing provides opportunities for students to learn and apply principles and elements of design and color theory through experimentation with drawing and painting techniques. Additionally, students learn to prepare canvases for paint and application of acrylic paints.
Sculpture #1053 (1 credit)
Sculpture includes the study of techniques including assemblage, carving, casting and modeling. Students learn three-dimensional construction with attention to design principles and elements. Students discover how to create effective spatial relationships using a variety of media including clay, glass, metal, plaster and paper. (Grades 10-12) Prerequisite: A minimum final grade of "C" in Art I or teacher recommendation
Fibers and Design #1050 (1 credit)
Fibers and Design teaches basic techniques in batik and dying, weaving, papermaking and needlework, while helping students develop sensitivity to color and design. Students explore functional and decorative crafts as well as non-functional fine arts.
Theatrical Art & Design #1721 (1 credit)
Theatrical Art & Design focuses on the process of "page to stage." Students' work develops and evolves as they analyze various scripts and make their own artistic choices to design, build and paint sets for stage productions. The work includes, but not be limited to, the theater productions of the Springfield Township High School drama students. (Grades 10-12) Prerequisite: Art I, Theatre I or Broadway Music Ensemble
Photography I #1560 (.5 credit)
Photography I students study the history of photography, critically analyzing works of art by photographers from a wide range of styles and movements. Students also explore what makes good composition and the techniques used by photographers including ISO, f-stops, depth of field, lighting, and shutter speeds. By the end of the semester, students operate a digital camera with confidence, begin to build a portfolio of images that show a critical eye for composition, and can download and manipulate images in Adobe Photoshop. (Grades 9-12) Supplies recommended: a 6-10 megapixel digital camera and memory card
Photography II #1565 (.5 credit)
Photography II extends students' knowledge of camera operations and digital photography techniques. They build their knowledge of the history of photography and gain a greater command of the principles of design and elements of art applied to composition. In addition, students further explore techniques in digital image manipulation in Adobe Photoshop and alternative printing techniques. Prerequisite: A final grade of "B" or better in Photography I. Supplies recommended: a 6-10 megapixel digital camera and memory card
Graphic Design #1570 (1 credit)
Graphic Design introduces students to the world of communication arts. Students utilize leading software (Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop and Adobe In Design) used in graphic design. Students learn to combine text with images to create successful compositions that ultimately shape viewer experiences. In addition, students learn techniques for exporting files into different formats for use across platforms, in multiple applications, and for the web. Students enrolled may be eligible for college credit through Montgomery County Community College with an additional fee and final portfolio review. (Grades 11-12) Prerequisite: A minimum final grade of "C" in Art I and teacher recommendation
