Web Design and Development I

Course Description

Students will gain an understanding of the social and ethical issues involved in Internet development. Students will learn XHTML, the underlying language of the web; as well as key concepts of web page and graphics design. Students will learn how to incorporate JavaScript into thier sites as well as create simple animations. Software used: Notepad, Macromedia Studio, Adobe Photoshop Elements. Grades 10-12

Marking Period 1 - Instructional focus is Design Basics
* Introduction to graphics, scanning, the digital camera
* Introduction to Fireworks
* Logo design, banner design, introduction to web page design

Marking Period 2 - Instructional focus is Coding Web Pages
* Introduction to Dreamweaver
* Planning a website, introduction to user interface design, usability and accessibility, testing and quality assurance
* XHTML

Marking Period 3 - Instructional focus is Enhancing Websites
* Introduction to JavaScript
* Introduction to Flash

Final Project - Students will build a website instead of taking an exam.

Grades

Assessments: Grading using the point system with rubrics or grading checklists on all assignments.

Cheating and plagiarism will result in a grade of zero for the project and the assignment may not be made up.

Student excused absence - student is responsible for making up assignments.

Next Step

If the student enjoys this course and earns a grade of B or better, they may seek my approval to enter Web Design and Development II. Web II focuses on creating professional websites.
