Database Fundamentals

Course Description

Students will learn data structures and database concepts such as relationships and normalization. Students will learn the process of specifying database application requirements, and will build a complete database project with tables, basic queries and basic reports. Grades 10-12

Marking Period 2 - Instructional Focus is Microsoft Access
* Advanced features of Microsoft Access
* Customizing a database with Visual Basic for Applications (VBA)
* Apply knowledge with independent project

Marking Period 3 - Instructional Focus is mySQL and the SQL language
* Transferring knowledge of databases to mySQL
* Syntax of SQL
* Apply knowledge with independent project

Course final project - Integrated project applying learned skills (instead of final exam)

Grades

Assessments:
40% - Classwork and projects
30% - Tests
30% - Participation and time management

Cheating and plagiarism will result in a grade of zero for the project and the assignment may not be made up.

Student excused absence - student is responsible for making up assignments.

Next Step

If the student enjoys this course and earns a grade of B or better, they may seek my approval to enter Database Administration.
