317.1, 417.1, 517.1. PROHIBITION OF WEAPONS ON SCHOOL PROPERTY

| 1. Purpose |
The Board recognizes the importance of a safe school environment to the educational process. Possession or use of weapons in the school environment is a threat to the safety of students and staff. Therefore, the use, possession or transfer of weapons by District employees on District property is prohibited unless the weapon has been approved by the building principal for possession in conjunction with a lawful, supervised activity or course.

Definition |
For purposes of this policy, District property means all property owned by the District, school buses owned or used by the District for school purposes, or any premises, grounds or vehicles used for official purposes.
Weapons shall include but not be limited to any knife, cutting instrument, cutting tool, nunchaku stick, brass or metal knuckles, fire arm, shotgun, rifle, bb or pellet gun, look-alike weapon, chemical agent, explosive device, and/or any other tool, instrument or implement capable of inflicting bodily injury.

Appropriate disciplinary and/or legal action will be taken against any employee who possesses weapons or who assists possession in any way. Employees possessing any weapons will be reported to the police.

| 3. Guidelines |
Any weapon on or about an employee while on District property is subject to seizure and/or forfeiture. Instruments required for the performance of assigned School District duties are permissible.

| 4. Delegation of Responsibility |
The Superintendent shall report to the Office for Safe Schools within the Department of Education all incidents relating to acts of violence or possession of a weapon by any employee on school property to the extent, if any, required by law.
