Administrative Rule

 

 

215-AR. Promotion and Retention

Reporting possession of any weapon or any act of violence by any person on school property to the Office of Safe Schools on the designated form twice per year.

High School

Grade 8

Criteria used for the Middle School apply to students in eighth grade.

Grade 9-12

Students must carry a minimum of seven (7) credits to be promoted each year.

Any student who has been retained may be placed in the next grade provided one of the following courses of action is taken:

  1. The failed subject(s) can be rescheduled with the student being placed in the next grade.
  2. The student completes 60 hours with a teacher certified in the failed area during the summer months. The teacher and program content must be approved by the principal. Students who successfully pass the sixty (60) hours of instruction will receive credit for the course.
  3. The student successfully completes a district-operated summer course.

Students attending vocational-technical programs will be required to maintain satisfactory progress towards graduation. Students falling behind in required courses and credits will be required to return to the high school or make up the courses and credits as needed for graduation the following year.

Students must be eligible to graduate (minimum of nineteen (19) credits in order to achieve senior status.

Middle School

The following shall apply for the purpose of determining advancement or retention for a student:

  1. A child’s instructional team and the school administration team will determine promotion.
  2. Students passing all subjects and attending school on a regular daily basis will be promoted to a higher grade level.
  3. Each student is expected to maintain punctual attendance at every session of school. A student's regular and punctual attendance will be an important factor when considering the advancement or retention of a student.
  4. Any student who is absent from school beyond thirty-five (35) days without serious reason, as verified by a physician, will be considered for retention.
  5. In order to be promoted at the end of a school year to the next grade level, students must pass the following courses for the year: Integrated Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies and Science.
  6. Students who fail two or fewer courses will have the opportunity to make them up in summer school. Pending approval of the Board of School Directors, Springfield Township Middle School will conduct a summer program in June and July. Failure to make up two or fewer failed subjects will result in a student repeating the grade level in which those courses were taken.

Elementary School

  1. Promotion or retention shall be determined after the consideration of
    academic achievement based upon regular classroom and standardized assessments.
  2. A student displaying academic frustration is referred to the Instructional Support Team in order to remediate him/her to a level of success for promotion.
  3. The recommendation of the Instructional Support Team will determine the promotion status of students in danger of failure.
  4. Students with an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) will be considered for promotion based upon the successful completion of objectives set forth in the IEP.
