203. Communicable Diseases and Immunization

In order to safeguard the school community from the spread of certain communicable diseases, the Board requires the following procedures to be used.

2.Guidelines

Immunization

All students shall be immunized against certain diseases in accordance with Pennsylvania statutes unless specifically exempt for religious or medical reasons.

No student shall be admitted to school who has not been immunized against such diseases as are enumerated by the Pennsylvania Department of Health and in the manner directed by the Secretary of Health and state regulations.

The implementation of this policy shall be the responsibility of the Superintendent and the nurse in each school building in the district, who shall be guided by the provisions of law and state regulations for the immunization of students.

A student shall be exempt from the requirements for immunization whose parent or guardian objects in writing to such immunization on religious grounds or whose physician certifies that the student's physical condition does not allow for medically safe immunization.

Health Records

The school district shall require that prior to admission of a student to school that the parent or guardian shall complete a medical history report form which shall include valid information regarding the known communicable disease history of the student. The school nurse or school physician may use such reports to advise the parent or guardian of the need for further medical care as set forth in Policy 209.

The school nurse shall report the presence of suspected communicable diseases to the Superintendent and the appropriate local health authorities, as required by the Pennsylvania Department of Health.

All health records shall be confidential, and their contents may only be divulged upon approval of the Superintendent, when necessary for the health of the student. Upon the written request of a parent or guardian such health records may be released to a physician.

Health records, including immunization records, for each student enrolled shall be maintained as established by the Pennsylvania Department of Health.
