109-AR. Challenged Materials

Any resident who wishes to request reconsideration of the use of any instructional material in the schools should submit a written request to the Superintendent. The criti¬ cism shall identify the specific material being challenged, and shall list the specific reasons for the concern.

The Superintendent shall inform the Board concerning the challenged materials.

The Superintendent shall appoint a Review Committee consist¬ ing of the building principal and teachers in the subject area of the challenged materials.

The review of challenged materials shall be treated objec¬ tively and as an important matter. Every opportunity shall be afforded those persons or groups questioning school materials to meet with the Review Committee and to present their opinions.

The Review Committee shall:

  1. Read and/or examine the challenged materials.
  2. Determine professional acceptance by reading critical reviews of the materials.
  3. Consider the acceptability of the materials as a whole rather than on passages or sections taken out of con¬ text.
  4. Discuss the challenged materials in the context of the educational program.
  5. Discuss the challenged items with the complainant.
  6. Prepare a written report analyzing the criticism and making recommendations regarding the continued use, discontinued use or modification of the challenged materials.

The Superintendent shall forward the Review Committee's report, along with his/her recommendation to the Board.

An appeal of this decision by any party may be made to the Board.

The decision of the Board concerning challenged materials shall be final.
