Any resident who wishes to request reconsideration of the use of
any instructional material in the schools should submit a written
request to the Superintendent. The criti¬ cism shall identify
the specific material being challenged, and shall list the specific
reasons for the concern.
The Superintendent shall inform the Board concerning the challenged
materials.
The Superintendent shall appoint a Review Committee consist¬
ing of the building principal and teachers in the subject area of
the challenged materials.
The review of challenged materials shall be treated objec¬ tively
and as an important matter. Every opportunity shall be afforded those
persons or groups questioning school materials to meet with the Review
Committee and to present their opinions.
The Review Committee shall:
- Read and/or examine the challenged materials.
- Determine professional acceptance by reading critical reviews
of the materials.
- Consider the acceptability of the materials as a whole rather
than on passages or sections taken out of con¬ text.
- Discuss the challenged materials in the context of the educational
program.
- Discuss the challenged items with the complainant.
- Prepare a written report analyzing the criticism and making recommendations
regarding the continued use, discontinued use or modification of
the challenged materials.
The Superintendent shall forward the Review Committee's report, along
with his/her recommendation to the Board.
An appeal of this decision by any party may be made to the Board.
The decision of the Board concerning challenged materials shall be
final.
