Challenged Materials

Any resident may challenge the suitability of particular books or other instructional materials. However, no parent or group of parents has the right to determine the instructional materials for students other than their own children.

The Board does recognize the right of an individual parent to request that his/her child not have to read a given book, provided a written request is made to the building principal.

Any resident of the community may formally challenge instructional materials used in the district's education program, based on appropriateness, by following established procedures in accordance with administrative rule 109-AR-2 as outlined in the Policy Manual of the School District of Springfield Township.

The final decision concerning controversial instructional materials shall rest with the Board, after careful examination and discussion of the material with school officials or anyone else the Board may choose to involve.
