Curriculum
Core Curriculum
The Springfield Township Elementary Schools are structured in a K-4 setting. The schools average 500 students. Kindergarten through third grade are self contained classrooms. Fourth Grade has structured specialists for Math, Science and Social Studies.
Students are assessed by traditional methods as well as having a comprehensive Math and Language Arts portfolio.
Each teacher has four to six computers in the classroom for curriculum integration, as well as a teacher station with projection, district-wide electronic mail system and internet access. Teachers also have access to AlphaSmart word processors that enable them to turn their classroom into a writing lab.
Fine Arts
In addition to our excellent faculty of grade level teachers, we have an outstanding group of specialists who provide a variety of important services to our children. Please note how these people work collaboratively with the classroom teachers and each other for the benefit of the children.
Present a week. Students taking music lessons may receive another period of instruction each week. The library is open on free periods for students to come in and do research or work on the computers. An alternate gym and art schedule is set up so that studetns have these subject areas 6 times a month.
Below you will find descriptions of the services they provide. Please call the school; Erdenheim Campus (215) 233-6085 or Enfield Campus (215) 233-6080, if you would like more information about any of the programs described below.

The Elementary Library Program
Mrs. Judy High - Erdenheim Librarian
Mrs. Peggy McLaughlin-Thomas - Enfield Librarian
The School Library supports the whole school program. The librarians provide students and faculty with resource materials for all curricular areas. She recommends books for sustained silent reading and for individual recreational reading. The weekly Library classes include guidance in book selection as well as skills instruction related to the use of materials in all libraries.
Volunteers are a very important part of our Library program. They help supervise the circulation desk, shelve and process books, prepare overdue notices and are always gracious about tackling other related tasks. They free the librarians to utilize more of their teaching skills with the children.
Our libraries have the Alexandria electronic card catalog system.
The Elementary Art Program
Ms. Kristi Hermann - Enfield Campus Art Teacher
Ms. Kristi Hermann - Erdenheim Campus Art Teacher
The elementary Art program is an integral part of the entire school curriculum. One look at our hallways and classrooms quickly confirms that fact. The art teachers often correlate art projects with classroom units of study as well as school wide initiatives such as the Artist-in-Residence experiences and multi-cultural programs. The overall program fosters a healthy attitude toward Art and an appreciation of the aesthetic elements in the world around us. Our goal is to have all children experience success at this level.
Weekly classes give children the opportunity to experiment with different types of expression in a variety of media as well as to become acquainted with the versatility of each medium. Included in the program are skills in drawing , painting and sculpture in the fine arts as well as craft projects such as papier mache, ceramics and weaving.
Children are "graded" NOT on the right or wrong way of expression. They are evaluated on their attitude and the effort they put into their work. Special encouragement is given to those children who are exceptionally talented and/or interested in this area.
The Elementary Music Program
Ms. Joanne K. Dieterly - Erdenheim Campus
Mrs. Betsy Selinger - Enfield Campus
Besides teaching weekly general Music classes, the music teacher conducts a Chorus of Fourth Grade students. She also gives instrument lessons to the Fourth Grade children. A Fourth Grade Beginner Band, which meets before school, is formed during the spring semester. Third Grade students are offered a recorder class each week in addition to their weekly general Music class. In addition, she provides musical accompaniment for assemblies and supports teachers in using musical activities to supplement the classroom curriculum. During the school year the music teacher produces at least two major musical programs: the Holiday program in December and the Festival of Arts programs in the Spring.
